Artist Statement:
My work over the past several years has been exploring complex, multiple figure, and sculptural compositions in terra-cotta. I cultivate a dynamic system in which several figures interact physically. There is a spontaneous order that emerges through the interaction of individual figures which results in a complex, yet delicately unified, composition. The composition cannot be planned or designed, it must emerge from the interaction of the individual figures. This interaction insinuates real cultural, biological and sociological phenomena.
The science of Emergence is the study of ways complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions among individuals and elements. Emergence is central to the diverse theories of Evolutionary Biology, Economics and Linguistics, manifested in such things as ant and termite colonies, commodity markets as well as the evolution of language. Emergence is also central to the artistic process in general and figurative sculpture in particular.
