Before artists had pencils and paper, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo and artists of that time drew with lead, silver, gold and other metal points to create timeless studies on small specially prepared surfaces.
Silver points were the most often chosen for drawing. Placed in a stylus they were used to make studies of delicately fine, light, permanent lines that darkened into a luminous warm hue as the silver tarnished with age. Of the 24 images on display in this exhibition, six are studies of the nude. The oldest was done was done by Burton Silverman in a life drawing sketch class in 1949 and over the years has turned a glowing amber tone not producible with any other medium.
The artists in this exhibition have been enticed by the elegance of this archaic medium but contemporary silverpoint artists are free of the former limitations of the medium. They are free to work as large as they choose on surfaces that allow erasing and the use of mixed media.
Steven Assael, Sherry Camhy, Burton Silverman, Costa Vavagiakis, Lea Colie Wight, Jason Yarmosky have been lured into exploring the figure with the haunting beauty of this old medium in enticing new ways.
The blockbuster exhibition “Drawing with Silver and Gold: Leonardo to Jasper Johns” at The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. then in The British Museum, London contains many silverpoint studies of the figure not to be missed. A sprinkling of other museums and galleries in America and London are also exhibiting work in the medium. Here is a listing of some of them.
